Being "Repaired " for the Great Utah ShakeOut

Monday night we had a family home evening on Earthquakes.  Since working with Food Storage Moms, I have been trying really hard to get some stuff put together and be a little more prepared.  We read the scripture “if ye are prepared ye shall not fear” and then went on to talk about that there was going to be an earthquake the next day.  I didn’t mention it was just a drill at first because I wanted to see what they would say.  Immediately Cowboy  started to cry.  So I knew I had explain myself.  I explained what a drill is, but I also talked to them telling them that this could really happen.  We talked about Earthquakes, and how to Drop, Cover and Hold on.  We explained what could happen in an earthquake and tried to reassure him that we need to be prepared.  Jack Jack kept asking a question in a frustrated voice and we couldn’t understand him.  I said the word “prepared” again and he said….that word, “How do we be Repaired?”  So I went on and told them ways we could be prepared as a family.  It was really cute that he was so attentive!

A couple weeks ago a friend of mine told me about some backpacks at Downeast home that were on sale, They are Pottery Barn and normally $40-60 bucks.  So I went in and got a small one that had Jacks name on it, plus found 4 more that were bigger and rolling, and they were only $3.00!!!  I bought 4 because that was all they at the time.  I am planning on going in and getting more.  I handed my kids their backpacks last night and they were SO excited.  We wrote down all the things that would be good to have in their backpacks if we ever had to grab it and go, and I told them that I was going to start buying the stuff and putting things in them.  They thought that was pretty cool.  Cowboy was still pretty nervous by the end of the night.  He said he didn’t want to be away from us the next day and that he hoped it didn’t actually happen.    I felt bad for him.  He is so scared of death and mom or dad dying.

The kids woke up the next day and I didn’t say anything to them about the Earthquake drill.  I had a plan to turn the radio on at 10:10 and kind of surprise them with it.

Cowboy going off to school  {he was fine and said it was fun}

Well Jack Jack remembered all about it and went out while I was busy doing school with Maddie and started packing his backpack.

I turned the radio on.  We all got under the table and then Jack Jack said, “Mom when is the shaking going to happen.  You told me it was going to be an earth shake!?!”  I guess he didn’t understand what I meant by mock or pretend.  Oh well it was sure cute!!  I am excited to get my kids a bit more onboard with emergency preparedness!!!
